International Aid Organizations Assist the Affected Population in Beslan

1. In response to the tragic events in Beslan, North Ossetia, the international humanitarian aid organizations operating in the North Caucasus have despatched relief items from available stocks to help care for the victims of the hostage crisis. The United Nations joined the International Committee of the Red Cross and many non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in providing medicines, disinfectants, and other medical supplies and equipment, as well as drinking water, food, and bedding. 2. This inter-agency effort is at the request of local representatives of EMERCOM and the Ministry of Health. It is meant to complement the massive emergency relief operation launched by the local and federal authorities.3. Deliveries of assistance are planned throughout the week, as needed. The UN remains in contact with the Government which has not officially requested international assistance but accepts humanitarian aid voluntarily provided by foreign countries and international organisations. 4. Media are invited to contact Ms. Victoria Zotikova at (+7-095) 787-2115 for further information.
