HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTSPAYS TRIBUTE TO MEMORY OF MURDEREDRUSSIAN JOURNALIST

9 October 2006 - United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights paid tribute today to the memory of journalist and human rights defender Anna Politkovskaia, saying her death represented a tremendous loss for Russia.The High Commissioner, who has visited the Russian Federation twice, said Anna Politkovskaia will be remembered for her force of character, her dedication and her fearless pursuit of justice on behalf of victims of human rights violations in Chechnya and elsewhere."Her death is a tremendous loss for the Russian Federation and for all who struggle for human rights around the world", she said.The High Commissioner noted that the country''s top prosecutor has reportedly taken charge of the investigation into the murder. A thorough probe to bring those responsible to justice in accordance with internationally recognized standards of due process will send a clear message against impunity and for the protection of human rights defenders in Russia, she said.The High Commissioner extended her deepest sympathy to Anna Politkovskaia''s family.
